West Springfield Public Schools: Nurturing the Child

“Our greatest

natural resource

is the minds

of our children.”

- Walt Disney

Welcome home!

Our overall vision is to create a comprehensive project that supports the healthy social and emotional development of young children so that they can be successful in school and in life.

The interventions address multiple levels- focusing on prevention efforts at the individual, family, school and community levels, and targeting the causal risk factors for early school difficulties.

We know that risk factors for early school difficulties include learning challenges, early behavior problems, familial psychological issues, and child rearing practices.

The research shows that several of the risk factors for early school problems also appear to be related to a child’s difficulties in establishing and maintaining early, important relations with parents, caregivers, peers, and teachers.

The West Springfield Public Schools will be offering many initiatives to staff, students, parents, and the community to support this vision.

This website was created by the WSPS Mental Health Committee and funded by a Mental Health Grant and a Special Education Program Improvement Grant.
